November 2017 PTA Meeting Minutes

BARNARD PTA MINUTES: NOVEMBER 2017

PTA Meeting Summary, Thursday, November 14, 2017

The meeting began at 7:00 pm with a welcome from Barnard PTA President Bryan Grossbauer and an introduction of Barnard School Psychologist Dr. Diana Planells-Bloom and Vice Principal Dr. Lori Pisani who both provided a presentation about DASA – New York State’s Dignity for All Students Act, which seeks to provide the State’s public elementary and secondary school students with a safe and supportive environment free from discrimination, intimidation, taunting, harassment and bullying on school property, including school buses and school functions.  Dr. Pisani and Dr. Bloom’s presentation provided an explanation of the school’s policy and associated procedures as reflective of the State law.  The presentation also provided an understanding of how the school recognizes the difference between developmental behaviors versus actual violations of DASA.  Additionally, it was discussed how we as parents can help our children in such a situation, understanding the effects of bullying and the practice at Barnard which includes “Hurt a friend, help a friend”.  Our administrators encouraged parents to contact Barnard’s Principal and Vice Principal with any concerns, questions, or to report any incidents that occur at school, on buses or on the playground.

The meeting then continued with an update that the positions of Treasurer and Secretary became vacated and these positions have now been filled by Senada Kocan, as Treasurer and Elizabeth Villano, as Secretary.

The YMCA After Care Program at Barnard is in jeopardy of being cancelled due to lack of enrollment.  The program takes place right at Barnard from dismissal time to 6:00 pm, and the children are being cared for by Barnard teachers.  Cost for the program is very affordable.  For more information contact csullivan@nrymca.org
